Where To Fish In Scotland

Scotland’s big four salmon rivers, the Dee, Spey, Tay and Tweed attract fisherman from around the globe in search of world-class salmon fishing.

The River Dee is simply the best spring salmon river in the world and it is here that many of the salmon fly fishing techniques that we now take for granted were first developed. Rising in the magnificent Cairngorms and flowing for over 80 miles through beautiful Royal Deeside, this river offers peace and tranquillity as you cast your fly into the clear waters of this amazing river.

In 2010 the River Tweed, in the Scottish Borders, produced more Atlantic salmon than any other river in Britain – 23,000 catches – and now ranks among the top salmon rivers in the world. Although it is most famous for its salmon fishing, there is also an excellent run of sea trout in the autumn.

The River Spey is the home of speycasting – a casting technique used in fly fishing that requires a longer, heavier two-handed fly rod, referred to as a Spey Rod. One of the major attractions of this river is its sheer size and strength which produces excellent hard fighting salmon. Another great salmon river in the Highlands is the River Findhorn, which flows through Strathdearn past Tomatin and down into Findhorn Bay.

The record for the largest ever rod caught salmon in Scotland is a 64lb specimen taken from the River Tay in 1922. This is one of Scotland’s most complex river systems and many of the tributaries such as the Earn, Isla, Tummel, Garry, Dochart, Lyon and Eden also offer excellent salmon fishing.

In the north east of Scotland, the River Don is one of the finest wild brown trout rivers in Europe and excellent pike and coarse fishing can be found around Loch Lomond, Loch Awe, the River Annan and other rivers around Dumfries & Galloway.
